Shipping & Export — How We Crate & Ship Bali Buddha Statues
Safely
To import Bali Buddha statues, you order from a Bali workshop
that crates each piece in custom timber, prepares Indonesian export
documentation, and ships by air freight (single or urgent pieces) or
ocean container (larger and wholesale orders) to your country, where you
clear customs and pay any import duty. At Suryana Buddha
Atelier we’ve shipped hand-carved statues to homes and businesses across
the USA, UK, Europe, Australia, the Middle East and Asia, and we handle
the Bali side of that journey so a heavy, brittle-edged stone Buddha
arrives intact. This page explains exactly how — crating, freight
options, documentation, costs and timelines — so you can buy with
confidence.

How we crate a
stone statue for a safe journey
Stone is heavy and its extremities — fingers, robe folds, the tip of
a flame finial — are vulnerable. Crating is the difference between a
statue that arrives perfect and one that arrives chipped. Our
process:
- Sound stone only. We ship pieces free of hairline
flaws that could open under vibration. - Custom timber crate. Each statue gets a crate built
to its shape, not a one-size box. - Foam & cushioning. High-density foam wraps the
piece; delicate points get extra padding. - Strapping & bracing. The statue is immobilised
so it can’t shift or rock in transit. - Corner & edge protection. The most impact-prone
areas are armoured. - Moisture barriers for sea freight. Ocean containers
are humid; we add barriers to protect finishes over weeks at sea.
Our full packing method is documented in how to pack
& crate a stone statue for export safely — useful whether we
crate for you or you’re learning the standard to expect.
Air freight vs ocean
container
Air freight suits single statues, smaller pieces and
urgent orders. It’s faster (days rather than weeks) but costs more per
kilogram — and stone is heavy, so air is best for smaller items.
Ocean container is the economical choice for large
statues and any wholesale volume. A shared (LCL) container works for a
few pieces; a full (FCL) 20ft or 40ft container is best for importers
and hotels. Per-piece cost drops sharply when a container is loaded
efficiently. See buddha statue

Export documentation &
permits
We handle Bali-side export paperwork: commercial invoice, packing
list, certificate of origin where required, and export declaration.
Balinese decorative stone and bronze Buddha statues are contemporary
handicrafts, which keeps documentation straightforward — but a few
points matter:
- CITES applies only to protected materials (certain
woods, ivory, some shells). Our stone and bronze Buddhas are
not CITES-restricted, so they don’t require a CITES
permit — but if you ever buy antique or mixed-material pieces elsewhere,
check. We cover this in is it legal
to export Buddha statues from Bali. - Export permits. Standard export documentation
covers our decorative statuary; we prepare it. - Your import side. You (or your broker) clear
customs at destination and pay any import duty/VAT. We’ll give you
accurate values and HS-code guidance for your paperwork.

Costs: what shipping
actually depends on
Freight cost is driven by weight, volume, distance and
mode. A small bronze head flying to Europe and a life-size
stone Buddha going by sea to Australia are very different numbers. We
give you a real quote for your piece and destination, but as a rule:
- Single small piece → air freight, moderate
cost. - Single large statue → often sea LCL to keep cost
sane. - Multiple pieces / wholesale → FCL container, lowest
per-piece cost.

Timelines by region
Ocean freight timing depends on route:
- Australia — the fastest sea route from Indonesia; a
few weeks door-to-port. - USA (West Coast) — a few weeks; East Coast
longer. - UK & Europe — several weeks by sea.
- Air freight — days, anywhere, plus customs
clearance.
Add carving/finishing time for made-to-order pieces and customs
clearance at your end. Full detail: how long does Bali
statue shipping take.
Insurance & damage
protection
We recommend transit insurance for stone, especially large pieces.
Our crating is built to prevent damage, and in the rare event of a
transit problem, proper insurance and our photographic pre-shipment
records protect you. We photograph each piece and crate before
dispatch.
Wholesale & container
programmes
For importers, retailers and hotels, we run consolidated container
programmes — loading a full container efficiently to minimise your
landed cost per statue. This is the single biggest saving in the whole
process. See wholesale and the container shipping
guide.
Why trust us with export
Export is where inexperienced sellers cost buyers money and
heartbreak — badly crated statues arrive broken, or paperwork stalls at
customs. We’ve done this for years, Wayan Suryana personally oversees
crating, and our workshop provenance means you always know exactly what
you’re shipping. See our about page and authenticity & guarantees.
