Bali statue shipping takes two distinct blocks of time that you must
add together: the carving time (statues are made to
order, so allow roughly three to eight weeks depending on size and
complexity) plus the freight time to your region. By
sea, plan on around two weeks to Australia, three to five weeks to Asia
and the Middle East, and four to six-plus weeks to Europe and the USA;
then add customs clearance and local delivery at your end. Air freight
is far faster — days rather than weeks — but only makes sense for small,
light pieces. Total realistic timeline for a hand-carved stone Buddha
shipped by sea is usually about two to three months from order to your
door.
I am Wayan Suryana, founder of Suryana Buddha Atelier in Batubulan,
Bali, and I have shipped hand-carved statues worldwide for eighteen
years. The most common planning mistake buyers make is thinking of
“shipping time” as just the transit — forgetting the carving comes
first. This guide breaks the whole journey down honestly so your
delivery date is realistic. For costs rather than timelines, see our Bali statue shipping
cost guide; for the full export service, our shipping and export page.
The two clocks:
carving time + freight time
Because we hand-carve each statue from a solid block of Balinese
stone to your specification, nothing is shipped off a
shelf. So your timeline always has two parts.
1. Carving time. As a rough guide:
- A Buddha head or small statue (under ~60 cm): about
3–5 weeks. - A medium statue (~60 cm–1.5 m): about 6–8
weeks. - A large or reclining piece (over 1.5 m) or an
intricate pose: 8–12 weeks. - A bulk or matched hospitality set: several weeks to
a couple of months, depending on quantity (see our hotels and
resorts sourcing guide).
2. Freight time. This is the sea or air transit,
plus customs and local delivery at the destination, covered region by
region below.
Add the two clocks together and you have your true lead time. If a
supplier quotes only “3 weeks shipping” for a made-to-order statue, they
are quoting you half the picture.
Sea freight timelines by
region
Sea freight is the standard, economical method for stone statues — it
is by far the cheapest per piece and the only sensible option for
anything heavy or in volume. Rough transit estimates
from Indonesia (Bali/Surabaya) to major destination ports:
- Australia — approximately 2 weeks. The fastest
major market thanks to proximity. - Singapore, Malaysia and nearby Asia — around 1–2
weeks. - Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia) — roughly 3–4
weeks. - Europe (UK, Netherlands, Mediterranean ports) —
approximately 4–6 weeks. - US West Coast — around 3–5 weeks.
- US East Coast — often 5–6 weeks or more (longer
routing).
These are sea-transit figures. You then add customs
clearance at the destination (typically a few days,
occasionally longer if inspected) and inland delivery
from the port to your address. So the door-to-door freight portion is
usually a couple of weeks longer than the pure sea-transit number.
Air freight — fast,
but only for small pieces
Air freight moves a statue in a matter of days rather than weeks,
which is tempting for buyers in a hurry. The catch is cost: airlines
charge heavily by weight, and stone is dense, so air freight is only
economical for small, lightweight pieces such as a
modest Buddha head. For a garden Buddha or anything substantial, air
freight cost becomes prohibitive and sea is the right choice. If you
have a genuine deadline for a small piece, ask us and we will price
both.
What causes delays —
and how we avoid them
From long experience, delays come from a predictable set of causes.
Knowing them helps you plan buffer time:
- Underestimating carving time. The most common one.
Made-to-order craft cannot be rushed without compromising quality. Order
early. - Customs inspection and clearance. Occasionally
customs holds a shipment for inspection or documentation checks. Clean,
accurate paperwork — which we prepare — minimises this. The legal side
is covered in is it legal
to export Buddha statues from Bali. - Non-compliant crating. Timber packaging that is not
ISPM-15 heat-treated can be held or fumigated at the border. We only
ship on compliant, stamped crates — see our crating
guide. - Peak-season and port congestion. Global shipping
slows around major holidays and during periods of port congestion; ocean
schedules can shift. Building a buffer protects your date. - Documentation gaps. Missing or inaccurate
export/import documents stall clearance. A professional exporter
prevents this; we walk buyers through the import side in our how to import a
Buddha statue from Bali guide.
Global sea schedules are governed by the international shipping
system overseen by bodies such as the International Maritime
Organization (imo.org); transit times are estimates that move with
real-world conditions, not fixed guarantees — which is exactly why we
build in sensible buffers.
How to plan your delivery
date
Work backwards from when you need the statue in place:
- Fix your target arrival date.
- Subtract customs + local delivery (allow ~1–2
weeks). - Subtract sea transit for your region (from the list
above). - Subtract carving time for your statue’s size.
- Add a buffer of a couple of weeks for peak-season
or clearance surprises.
That gives you the date by which you should confirm your order. For a
medium stone Buddha shipped to Europe or the USA, that typically means
ordering around two to three months ahead of when you
want it standing in your garden or lobby. For Australia, a little less;
for large or bulk orders, more.
We keep you informed the
whole way
At Suryana Buddha Atelier we give you a realistic combined timeline
up front, send progress photos during carving, and keep you updated
through crating, dispatch and transit — no guessing, no vanishing
statue. See the full process on our shipping
and export page and our workshop story on the Suryana
Buddha Atelier homepage.
Have a deadline in mind? Message the atelier on
WhatsApp at wa.me/6281128590000 or request a timeline and quote through our contact
page. Tell us the statue’s size and your destination and target date
— we will confirm exactly when to order so it arrives on time,
hand-carved and safely crated.
