The village:
Batubulan, Bali’s carving heartland
Batubulan sits on the road between Denpasar and Ubud and has been
Bali’s centre of stone carving for over a century. Its name means
“moonstone,” and its workshops have long supplied the guardian figures,
shrine statues and temple reliefs you see across the island. Growing up
here means growing up around chisels, dust and stone — carving is not a
hobby learned late but a trade absorbed from childhood.
It’s also why genuinely Balinese Buddha statues come
from places like this: the skill, the tools, and the knowledge of local
stone are concentrated in a handful of carving villages, and Batubulan
is the most storied of them.
The family: three
generations of carvers
Suryana Buddha Atelier grew out of a family workshop. Wayan Suryana’s
grandfather opened a shop carving temple guardians and shrine figures
for the surrounding villages. His father took it on, deepening the
family’s reputation for fine facial work — the calm, balanced expression
that makes or breaks a Buddha. Wayan learned at their side: first
fetching and roughing stone as a boy, then carving detail, then, over
eighteen years running the workshop, mastering the whole craft from
block selection to final finish.
When Wayan founded Suryana Buddha Atelier, it was to do one thing
well: bring authentic, ethically-made Buddha statues to
buyers around the world who want the real thing — not a factory casting,
but a hand-carved piece with a maker’s name behind it.

Suryana, Master Carver
Wayan Suryana is a third-generation Batubulan stone carver and the
master carver behind every piece we ship. His name carries meaning —
Surya is the sun, and he chose “Suryana” for the atelier to
evoke dawn light falling across freshly carved stone.
Wayan personally:
- Approves every commission brief, choosing the right
stone and pose for your climate and space. - Oversees the carving of significant pieces from
block to finished figure. - Signs off on finishing and patina before anything
leaves the workshop. - Inspects every export crate, because a statue that
arrives broken is a statue that was never really finished.
That hands-on involvement is the E-E-A-T behind our work: real
experience, real expertise, a real named authority, and the trust that
comes from being able to meet the maker.
The materials:

We work in two Balinese stones and in cast bronze, and we know
exactly where our stone comes from:
- Paras Kerobokan — a soft, pale-grey limestone-tuff
from the Kerobokan area, prized for taking fine detail and for that

Bali; dense, dark and hard-wearing, ideal for coastal and fully exposed
sites. - Cast bronze — for crisp detail and low-maintenance

Knowing the source matters. Genuine paras Kerobokan
stone behaves differently from cheaper substitutes, and using
the right stone is part of what makes our statues last.
Our ethics
We carve to order and hold reasonable stock — we don’t strip
resources or cut corners. Our carvers are skilled tradespeople paid for
skilled work, not anonymous labour. We source stone from established
Balinese quarries and run a workshop that keeps a heritage craft alive
